    Coal fire
Great in theory, but it means preparation, cleaning, etc
Also the room will take some time to then heat up

As you have gas central heating, go for a real effect gas fire

My last house had a real coal fire, never again

Any wood or coal burning fire will take a lot of upkeep, also make your room dirty and coal wood isnt actually cheap!

Getting one ov these should not be as messy as a open fire as it's contained

Is it for heating or just as a feature?

Open fires look and smell great but log burners heat better but you dont get the same smells being enclosed.

We are opening up our old fireplace and having an open fire but its a feature 'plus' and extra bit of heat as we have central heating already.

It may be contained, but you will still need to take the ashes out and also put fuel in!!
