Default Signum 2.0 dti starting problem

Sorry to anyone who has already seen this problem, I have posted it on the end of another thread, but here it is, I would be very grateful if someone could help me out:

I tried to start my Signum, turned it over a few times and eventually the battery died. I put some jump leads to it and cranked the engine again. After about 20 seconds it started and then stopped after 5 seconds. Cranked it again for 10 seconds and it eventually started and stayed running. What could this be? Battery? Glow plugs?

(I did the glow plug trick, ignition on and off a few times to get them warmed up, the battery may be dodgy, but when I had the other car and jump leads attached, it seemed to have a good turn over.)

After getting it to start, I drove it up and down the village a few times starting and stopping it without any problems. I then got home, parked it, and tried starting it again, it started and the stopped with a Spanner icon on the dash. I tried to start it again, and when I turned the key, nothing happened at all, turned it off and then tried again a couple of times and then the starter motor turned over and the car started!!!!!

    What could the problem be?

Leak off pipes are talked about a lot on these forums for a similar problem, but they all look OK to me! Could it be the battery?

I put my code scanner on the car but there were no fault codes registered!

The car did have P0500 (Speed sensor) and P1222 (Traction control circuit fail) on it when I bought it, but nothing now!

Any help would be gratefully received

    Update:

Just took the car out, started perfectly, I guess because the engine is warm (the glow plug symbol didn't come on when I turned the ignition on).

I've ordered a set of glow plugs from eBay, can't really hurt to try

Fuel filter? Would this cause the symptoms I am experiencing? It seems to start well after it has warmed up. I may as well get one

When I have had this issue, after a while the filter can get partially blocked ,when you look at it,if it is dirty and slightly distorted that means it is strugling with the fuel demand of the pump, hopeit sorts it for you, also. When filling your filter with diesel spray aload of wd40 in there aswell, does the pump a load of good, red bull for pumps lol.

The fuel filter didn't turn up today, but I needed to start the car, so I tried it again.

Turned it over 5 or 6 times for 20 seconds. Nothing. Connected my other car to it and let the starter cool down for 20 minutes. Went out and turned it over a few times and the engine shuddered and started, but chugged to a halt again. 10 minutes later I tried it again and it started and ran flawlessly. I turned it off after 10 minutes and it started fine again after that.

It must be the glow plugs mustn't it?

I ordered a set of plugs yesterday anyway, can't help putting a new set in

OK. I put new glow plugs in, but the problem is still here. I am going to change the fuel filter later, to see if that cures the problem. If it doesn't, I don't know what to do.

The leak off pipes look fine, but maybe there is air getting into the system somewhere else. Any idea how to find out?

I changed the fuel filter last night and parked the car on the flat rather than uphill in my drive and this morning it started with one crack, no problem. So, I don't know know if the fuel filter was the problem (it didn't look too bad) or because I parked on the flat. If it is to do with where I parked it, would this mean it is very lightly to be leak off pipes?

To be honest mate, every now and again,if I leave mine a couple of weeks ,I get the same issues.
But not all the time, does my head at times, also I wonder if your fuel level can affect it,
For example if you have less than a 1/4 tank full, your more likely to have issues, as the more fuel in your tank, the more weight pushing it along the pipes helping the pump, just an idea matey....
Good luck, right gotta go ,off to the match now.
