Have the insurance companies gone bonkers?

We currently own a 57 plate Vectra SRi 1.9CDTI 150. Despite the fact I've been driving longer than Emma, she's always had a car, her own insurance and so has 6 years NCB (I haven't owned a car in my name for over 7 years so have no NCB) so its always made sense to insure our car in her name and the insurance costs a touch under £500 p/a.

There's a good chance that I'll be changing jobs soon and the new job is likely to involve a lengthy commute meaning we'd need a second car. Being a sensible sort of chap I thought perhaps we should get a cheapo little run-about (low tax, low insurance group) and put it in my name with me as the primary policy holder... Found just the sort of thing I was looking for in a corsa 1.7Di, 65bhp, low tax and group 3 insurance... My best quote on confused.com was £750!! Assuming it's because I have a ***** I added emma as a named driver.. £700! Then just out of interest, I changed the vehicle details to that of our current Vectra.... £665!!.. Just to check I wsn't going mad I found a GSI in autotrader and put those details in... £700!

Is it just me or is that completely bonkers? Why the hell can I insure a GSI for less than I can insure a tatty little corsa with no power!?...

It is all to do with likely hood to be stolen + your address. I guess the corsa has less security and is more likely to be nicked.....

Yep as above, Rx-8 was cheaper to insure than my 2.2 vectra last year by over £100.....Tested it on my moms 1.3 mazda 2 and it came out around the same (£700) as the vectra just total madness. Luck has it it came down to £530 this year...

To make things even more twisted, my wife is learning to drive did her a quote on a 12 month policy fully comp with a provisional license on my moms mazda 2 and it came out at £495.......£300 as a named driver on my vectra....Total madness

try hastings direct and direct line are always worth a shout if you are a new customer........ but never renew with the robbing toerags as they always get the first years discount back when you renew!!!!!

A mate who works for a broker told me any car that is seen as a little boy/girl racer car or can be easily modded is automatically quoted a higher insurance regardless of its group.
Most of my mates (21-25yo) are paying about £600 on a group 3-7 car, Corsa, Astra Bora etc, where as I have paid similar for large cars, such as Mondeo, Vectra, Saab. (groups 8-13).

Just been on the comparison sites again!.. If I take a new job and need a second car, I could insure an 03 Veccy 2.2DTI SRi for £560!!... Think that's that decided!!

Pretty much standard with all the Insurance companies these days, loyalty bonus is minimal.

its mental some of the prices

cheapest i could find for my 04 vectra 2.0 dti was £1300 fully comp, i nearly died.
thats double what my 98 vectra sri 140 was, and i thought that was rediculous at the time
