Default A Little Help To Get Me Started!

    Hi all,

I'm certainly not new to car cleaning, but my experience only reaches Washing, claying, T-cutting, SRP, and waxing. (I don't T-cut every wash, never T-cutted my Vectra, only when I had a white van, it seemed to be the only thing that got it back to white).

As I live in a flat at the moment, I don't clean my car as much as I would like to, and I have a real interest in machine polishing it to remove all the swirls and making the paintwork the best I can, which leads me onto my next paragraph.

Next Tuesday I will be moving into a house, WITH A DRIVEWAY!! WOOP WOOP! so that will make it really easy to wash and maintain my car! I want to buy a machine polisher. Am I right in saying the 2 different kinds are rotary and orbital, rotary just spinning, and orbital, the whole pad just moving in a circular motion but not spinning. I used to have one of those £30 ones from Halford's with the 2 handles on the side, it was an orbital and it was utter rubbish! So I want to buy a rotary one, and would like you to recommend one to me. I've seen the Silverline ones for really cheap, but do you get what you pay for, and will it be naff?

Also what pads would I need? I have no idea which ones to buy, which ones cut, are they different roughness? I don't want to go and buy a big bumper pack if I'm not going to use them all.

Also what kinds of polish would I need? If it helps, my Vectra looks like it's never been machine polished, and is VERY swirl marked and a few scratches. Do I machine polish plastic body coloured bumpers?

Sorry for all th questions but I want to start off on the right foot with spending as little as possible!

    Thanks

Basically rotary polisher,s are best left to the experienced , your better off with a D A dual action polisher , i have both and i much prefer to use the d a
As for pads they come in 3 different basic types .
    cutting pads
    polishing pads
    finishing pads
this is the sort of thing you are looking for but there are variation ,s ie different pads different polishes

Thanks for the advice, just actually found the sticky on machine polishing after I posted the thread >.<

But I would still be interested in people's recommendations on polishers and polish.

Is the D.A polisher alot better than those £30 ones in Halfords as shown below?

John you will find a da is a lot easier to use than those ones you mentioned from halfords . These i believe have a reputation for causing more problems than they solved .
Have an ask around the members local to you to see if anyone can give you a demo of a, D A that way you can see for yourself how it works without the pitfalls of trying to use one alone .

Hi mate I used the halfords one that you mention on my first cars which was ok as the y were old cars, but haven't used it on my vectra, still have it in my she somewhere, but have since used a Meguiars DA I must say the ease of use is far more superior to the halfords lump. But at £200 a unit I haven't yet bought one.
