Signum started then stopped

I have a 2004 Signum 2.0 and started it this evening. It ran for 30 seconds and then stopped, I don't remember seeing the EML illuminated. It then took a minute to start again, but seemed OK. I used a diagnostic tool and error codes P1222 (traction control) and P0500 (speed sensor) were pending...this may be from a while ago...maybe.

Anyway, I lifted of the plastic engine cover to see if I could spot anything and discovered a small white pipe with a hole in it and a pipe fitting (down between the engine and battery) with 1 pipe connected and the other connection with nothing....


Notice the hole in the white pipe in the center of the screen. What is this pipe, and what does it do?



Notice the black pipe fitting just to the right of the center, should there be something connected to this?

I take it from the pictures of your engine that you have the diesel 2.0? Some people might mistake your description of "Signum 2.0" as being the petrol engine.

Yes. It is the 2.0 DTi engine.

I understand the white pipe is a vacuum pipe, but I still cannot work out what is meant to be connected to the black connector (pic 2)
