Default which used vectra to get?

I've been ploughing through the latest 20 pages of threads on this forum and quickly came to the realisation that posts are dominated by problems with diesel engines.

So i decided that petrol engines are the ones to get. But then I came across a thread that said that gearboxes on the 1.8 engine don't last very long. Something to do with the torque, I think.

This is where I could do with some sound advice. Just which petrol Vectra would be most likely to give me reliable and durable service? Which model year would be the best to get?

I'd be grateful for help here, please.

Never had any problems with my diesel Vectra matey, what you need to look at is how many miles your are going to cover a year taking into account the price difference. What extras you would like and how much money you have to spend.

1.8 are reliable too, there is a thread somewhere with a poll on it on most reliable petrol engine. Had mine nearly 4 years with no issues at all. Touch wood.

Keep in mind mate that the CDTi is by far the most common engine on the forum so naturally more problems will pop up on the forum.

TBH seen 100x more failed DMF's on diesels than failed F17 gear boxes on 1.8's on my time on this forum. Buy post 2003 and the 1.8 is the most reliable Vec C out there(no EGR) and the only issue is intermittent clutch judder and dodgy thermostats(£10 fix). But on the plus side +40MPG is easy on the motorway, low to mid 30's if its a town run around, and the only other things to look for are the same things that afflict all Vec C's, broken springs and worn rear upper control arms.

Thanks for the quick replies, fellas. It looks like the 1.8 petrol is the one to go for as there are also a lot of posts re troublesome diesels on other forums. It seems that they are now too complicated for their own good.

A quick glimpse on autotrader and ebay indicates that the petrols are cheaper than the diesels, too. I'll take a test drive or two next week to see how I like the car.
