Are you the first owner? If not possible that the cat has collapsed at some point and the previous owner bashed the insides out. Happens a lot on the 1.8 and is a quick, cheap and easy fix.

Possibly a pre owner gutted it as a quick fix for a failed cat?
Also overfuelling and excess fuel in the cat can cause the innards to deteriorate and will eventually leave u with a shell.

Odd, that, you can remove the pre cat on a 2.2 but the Vec 2.2 doesnt have one. If you remove the cat it will throw a big wobbler. Is there any other wires that dont look stock under there?

Nope it was all bulk standard when i first got her, with two previous owners and 30k on the clock im gonna whip the silencer off at some point to see if if there is any debris floating around inside, i just cant get my head round the fact that the cat is completly gone but i would say it defo hasnt been knocked out coz iwould have had a fault code come up ages ago surely

When the innards deteriorate they turn into a black charcoal like substance. If they havent completely melted away then thats what you'll be looking for.
