    Default brake light fault (confused)

had brake light lamp come up on dash and fault message "brake light" on checking no bulbs are gone but on one side the lamp below the indicator is on and on the other the second down lamp is on (i assume the first is a back up for the main one failing) also the brake lights work with the ignition off?? and does the vectra have 2 fogs as I only seem to have one lighting.

have played about with the bulbs but cannot get both clusters doing the same.anyone got an idea of what is wrong?

Vectras only have one fog lamp on the offside cluster.

I have heard if the bulb is weak and looks like the filament is breaking down and coating the inside of the bulb a silvery colour then the warning light will indeed come on.

I also understand that the computer will switch which lights it uses as a brake light, so I would try inspecting the bulbs and try popping in some new ones.

One of the two upper rear brake / tail lights is nearing failure
Replace both upper bulbs, compare and you will find one is slightly darkened
The side which was two down has failed, hence why it swaps to the lower position to compensate
You've not advised whether this was the nearside or offside

The brake light check works when the ignition is in the on position (engine does not need to be running)

Yes, Vectra C only has one rear fog light (offside in UK)
