Default OBD connector diagnostic tools. dangerous?

How dangerous to use are diagnostic tools? The ones that plug into the OBD connector?

Tempted to use one to activate the trip computer, but as im a complete noob to cars im a little worried i may kill my car. Im handy when it comes to computers tho, and since this is more IT based than pipes and filters i think i should be ok.

Im thinking that as long as im carefull, and dont do anything that im not 100% certian of, i should be ok.

    Thoughts?

Using legitimate opcom(vaux-com) or tech 2, there is no real risk since you also get the backup and support of the manufacturers/programmers, using cheap knockoff units is a risk and you'll probably find no one will comment since discussing illegal opcom/tech2 is against forum rules

Thanks for your reply. I have been very careful not say wether i am using a tech2 or a opcom knockoff. Its possible i may have access to both.

But im just needing to know the risks, before i start, as depending on what im buying, its a big investment. Ive heard about wiping the ecu, so i need to know how hard or easy it is to do? Have the people that have problems after using these machines been stupid, and clicked things without thinking. Or is killing your car as easy as plugging it into the socket?

Sorry to the mods and admin, if, even with my delicate wording, i am still breaking the rules.

    +1 me to

Try searching on VVOC as they are more liberal when it comes to this topic. That's how i researched and sourced mine!

That way there is no rule breaking happening on Vectra-C and you get the infromation you needed.

as above... always make note of previous settings and do one thing at a time and you shouldn't have any problems
