Default EML coming on - Supermarket Fuel?

A mate of mine with has a 2004 Vectra cdti 120 that is occasionally displaying the EML, although the car is running fine and there are no codes coming up when we check. He has another mate who is a Kia mechanic in a large garage and he has told him that they are getting a lot of cars coming in with similar problems and the common thread seems to be the owners are using Supermarket fuel. They have been advised to change to a 'branded' fuel and in a lot of cases it has solved the problem. Just wondering if any other members have had any experience / views on this. Appreciated this question may have been raised before but have done a cursory search and can't find anything.
We have checked all the usual suspects - sensor connections, egr valve, replaced the fuel filter, etc but still got the problem.
Apologise if duplicated post but would appreciate any views

I've personally noticed that you don't get as much to the tank with morrisons diesel. Just makes you wonder what crap they are eeeking it out with as it's obviously not combustable

Tesco fuel is a good bit better but I only use shell fuel in my car now

All fuels must reach a certain specification, however "premium" fuels will have additional additives to improve combustion and also clean the engine.

Still seems to be the age old saying "You get what you pay for!"

When the warning light comes up, are you checking right there and then, or are you checking when the warning light has gone out, plus the engine has been restarted several times?

If it is intermittent then is it only shortly after start up or after driving for some time?

Personally if it is intermittent and the engine is not going into safe mode, don't worry about it
I would be more concerned if it was appearing almost 50% of journeys and/or going into safe mode

Thanks for your replies - We've checked with the light on and off and nothing shown, its hard to describe exactly when its coming on as it seems to differ - on average after 30 minutes driving and not every journey - stays on until engine switched off and cleared when restarted. The engine has never gone into safe mode!

Sounds like you are using an incompatible code reader
If the warning light is on, then a code is live and can be read

Restarting the engine will clear any previous live warning, hence why it is best read when the warning light is still on

It is extremely unlikely to be related to the fuel itself, as it is diesel and in general all come from the same refinery

I'm using the code reader I can't mention on here and definatley nothing showing - I agree with you it should throw up a fault when the light is on - but nothing. We have tried a Maxiscan handheld code reader that works with this car, showing rpm, temperatures, etc -but still nothing!

Appreciate what you say about the fuel but having done a bit of googling this morning it looks like the difference is in the additives that Shell, Esso, etc add that Supermarkets don't

    Default

Phone up two or three dealerships
Discuss the symptoms and see if they will do a full TECH2 on a no-fault no-pay basis :
If no fault code is found, no charge, and if one is found then pay accordingly

The dealership I use will happily do this

As above, make sure the warning light is on, arrive at the premises and leave the engine running so that the warning stays live
