Exclamation Thermostat Issue?? Or Something Else

I changed my thermostat about a year ago with the new updated part. Now I have started to realise I can do up to 8-10 miles and it will reach 80 when it normally sits between 85-90. On Long journeys its gets up to 85-90 and stays there.

    Is there a problem occuring?

Hi, Presuming you still have the 1.9 cdti 150 - sounds about right - I've changed mine recently on a 1.9cdti 120 and that takes around 5 -6 miles before I get a reading on the temp gauge although warm air is coming out of the vents well before then. The correct temp for the thermostat is 88 degrees (can't find the degree character on this laptop) so your figures are spot on. It can drop slightly depending what fan setting you have on. If like me you have the screen demister on full on a cold morning this will lengthen the time it takes to get a reading on the temp gauge.

A broken thermostat is usually indicated by one or more of these symptoms:

    1. The temperature needle never reaches the correct reading

    2. The needle eventually gets to the correct reading but goes back down again when air is flowing freely into the radiator (i.e. motorway journey)

    3. The needle goes too high in traffic and takes ages to get back down past 95 degrees (thermo stuck closed).

Your sounds ok to me if it doesn't do any of the above.

You also have the fact that a diesal takes longer to warm up, Ive just changed mine on my 2.2 petrol as it had stuck, after changing the water pump????? ( don't know why it stuck?) and before I changed it, it was running at 90 degrees and now it runs at 85 so it's alot cooler.
you also have a wind chill of minus something at the moment aswell.

I wouldn't say a drop of 5 degrees is a lot cooler - a slight variation can be expected and it also depends on the accuracy of your sender unit, gauge, and the outside temperature.
