    Default Winter tyres. Why?

Left my winter tyres on but looking at the weather i don't think they will be needed this winter lol.

    Has anyone had snow?

I've only driven on snow about two days this winter (November 2011 onwards)

    Winter tyres have two benefits
    The tread pattern
The compound can cope with lower temperatures

If the ambient temperature is rarely going to be below 5'C then there is little or no benefit
The same results can be had with summer / all-weather tyres with at least 5mm of tread

Hence why around October / November I buy two new front tyres and again in December as the first snow falls
These will normally then last through the winter, so my next tyre change is around April

Last winter I didn't bother driving after returning home, I knew there was no point

Answering the question in title: why? Well if the winter suddenly came, it would be better to be prepared for following situations

I drove home one night in the snow on summer tyres and thats it. Snow is forecast up here for the weekend so I wouldn't put your winters away just yet

Nice car park near mine where you can always do a few handbrake turns when there is a bit of snow!
