    Default 2.2 Diesel starting problem

    Hi guys,

I have got a 2003 2.2 Diesel Vectra and its becoming a pain to start.
The glow plug light only comes on when its cold, usually the first start of the day and the car starts no problem.
Every other start throughout the day the light does now come on and the car is a pain in the arse to start, it turns over for ages and lately has started to flatten the battery.
Replacing the battery isnt really sorting the problem though so want to get to the bottom of it.
Is it normal that the glow plug light doesnt come on everytime?
Could it be the diesel is running back? Does this model have leak off pipes?
If it does start after ages of turning over then it belts out a lot of smoke. It otherwise drives absolutely fine once it has started.

    ANy ideas guys?
    cheers
    James

as you suggested replace your leak off pipes. There is an uprated part. This was the problem when I had my 2.2 saab. The glow plug light on that only came on when very cold. Others will have better knowledge of the 2.2 in a Vec though

Have you tried changing your glow plugs?
I have just changed mine today as I too was having trouble starting the car when cold (Its a 2.2DTI). I used to get a spanner light for about 30 seconds after staring the car with lots of whit/greyish smoke with a smell of diesel.
After changing the glow plugs no more light and starts with ease, cranks over 2 x then fires straight up.

no havent changed them but can do, i was thinking that it coudnt be that as when the glow plug light comes on it starts every time but it only comes on if its cold.
Its plays up if ive been using it for an hour or so and turn it off, it then doesnt want to start although its warmer and no glow plug light comes on

i will try that then but confused that its ok when its cold, cos the light comes on and goes out and it starts first time.
Its only a pain to start when its been used? will new glow plugs fix that then?

I had this problem and you should find my threads with a bit of searching.

The ECU monitors the glowplugs and you'll get a fault code if one or more of them fails.

The engine will be slightly warm once it has been run once in any day and the issue seems to be that the ECU decides that on subsequent starts that it doesn't need a pre-heat and this can sometimes make it a bit hard to start.

You can see if this is the issue that you have by removing the connector from the coolant temperature sensor as this forces a preheat (and switches the fans on as well). Just give it a couple of seconds then reconnect the connector and start the engine. If this is your problem it should start straight away.

The only things I found improved this for me were a new battery (as mine's best days were behind it) and a new crankshaft sensor (which also made the engine run a bit smoother). I took the car in for a software update but was told that is was already on the latest version.
