    Question holiday car insurance

I am looking to buy a car to leave at my holiday house in Spain for when we go on holidays. Do I have to insure it in the UK or in Spain? Do I have to be a resident in Spain to buy a Spanish car or should I take a UK registered car and change it to Spanish plates when I get it there? Any help will be appreciated thanks.

Cant really help with spain, but this is what I learned when looking at doing it in Italy, and im sure some bits will apply.

You have to be an Italian resident to register a car in Italy
Most Uk insurance companys will only cover you for 30 days abroad, and you must return to the UK between trips (however there are a few that will do longer). Google expat insurance
For a car to be legal abroad it must be legal in the UK, so must have a valid MOT. This means returning to the UK once a year.

What I will end up doing is getting a mate in Italy to register and insure a car for me. In italy you insure a car not a driver, it may be the same in Spain.

Hope some of the above is of help

Surely it would be cheaper just to hire a car there, as and when required
Equally, this will give you a higher specification car and it will be new every year

Your UK registered car can remain UK registered for up to 12 months outside the UK
Longer than this is known as permanent export
Details are on the V5C for your vehicle

Thanks for the advise guys, I don't know if the law is the same in Italy and Spain I'll try to find out, as for hiring a car it will cost a small fortune to hire a car every time we go out there (3 or 4 times a year), was hoping someone on here has done the same and can give me advise on how they did it.

I moved to France last summer and took my car with me. What a pain in the back side it has been to get it re-registered in France. My insurance in the UK were being funny too when I told them to cancel it, as I was now permanently abroad. They did not believe I had new cover over here. All done now but was a long saga

I had an argument about a similar thing with hastings once when I was leaving them. They wouldnt let me cancel till I prooved I had other insurance. I obviously told them to get stuffed as it was up to me if I chose to get insurance not them.

Anyway back on topic. Might be worth speaking to the Spanish equivalent of the DVLA. thats the only way youll get an honest answer. Im sure a car dealer will happily sell you a car even if you cant insure it etc.
