    Default 2.2 dti turbo fudged!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi guys, well it would appear that the turbo on my 2003 dti has given uo the ghost!!

It started sirening/whistling and going into limp mode while back so i went through the mission of replacing the hoses etc but to no avail!

After a frustrating weekend of search and destroy the problem i decided to whip off the turbo and have a butchers and there is was, Alas the exhaust turbine is... well mangled for want or a better word.

It looks like one of the fins broke then got mashed up buy the others and in doing so managed to take chunks out of the rest.

After an hour of swearing at it and bending the poor mangled fins back into some sort of shape i had no option but to put it back on and its actually working well sort of.......

It boosts of a fasion but obviously i need a new one or the bits to recon this one! anyone know the best place to go to get a replacement or the bits i need.. oh and hopefully for less that £400 which is where i am ATM

    Thanks in advance!!

I had my turbo rebuilt at Turbo Rebuilds in Blackpool, it cost me £200, but only because it didnt need anymore parts other than bearings.
    http://stores.ebay.co.uk/turbospares
They also have a shop on ebay, where you can also buy a turbo rebuild kit for the turbo. But I would'nt do that unless you can balance it.

Of course your can will be off the road whilst it gets done.
    My car had 78k miles.

Another option is to buy a used turbo (It's a GT15V on yours), from ebay/scrapyard fit it and then get yours rebuilt.
It does'nt have to come from a Vectra, the middle bit will be the same, the inlet and exhaust bits will be different.
But in my opinion, most used turbo's will also probably need an overhaul.
The donor car was scrapped for a reason.
Best of luck getting it sorted.

    Thanks mate,

I managed to get one from flea bay, Mine is the GT18V, i took it apart earlier to have a proper look at the damage and its fooked!!

Im still a little ?????? as to what happened to it ive had a good look inside the unit and the manifold and what ever caused it to break is not there anymore!!

Also the one i took off is a recon unit and looks like it was done by Garrett, i guess ill have to put the new one on and hope its ok, i cant find any debris at all anywhere so god only knows what caused it to fail!!

The clearance between the spinning vanes and the surrounding metalwork is very small.
The bearing will probably be knackered, but the impellor might still feel ok until it is spun at high revs, as it maybe only held in place by the rubber seals.
I have read that a turbo is worth 75K miles before it's knackered.
But i had an early Vectra C 2.0DTi in which did 120K with the same turbo, but I caned it up and down the North West motorways, which I think was good for it.
I also think the diesel fuel has also changed, I dont think it is as kind to engines as it once was.

this one is definatly a rebuild i found the recipt it was changed in mar 2010 at a cost to the prevous owner of £845 fitted!!!!! It also had a replacement etched plate with a garrett/honeywell logo on it stuck over the old one.

Since then the cars done 25,000 miles, the other wierd thing is there is no scoreing or marking at all on the inner casing casing if there was play in the shaft then surley there would be marks where it was rubbing off the casing??

I would just use a proper seal and a smear of grease to help it seat properly. Silicone sealer whilst handy can also be a nightmare if too much is used as it gets everywhere and can come off in long pieces.

The seals are about a £1 from ebay.
Sounds like the previous owner may have been ripped off, bent vanes but no other damage.
And the GT18 part no does not sound right either.

Either way, as long as it works when you've finished, thats the main thing.

Well.... that was a bit of a headache, Do you know what the difference between the gt18 and gt15 because i had an intresting day to say the least. Ok so the old turbo, on both the original etched plate and the new one that was stuck over it when it was rebuild both say GT18V. The new turbo that i got hold of also has GT18V on the plate however it was different!!!

The outlet was smaller and the actuator is in a different place????
I ended up taking the outlet casing or what ever you call it from my old unit and then putting ot in the new one! when the new one came the outlet was pointing the wrong way also, not having that much experience with how turbos go together i didn't realise that you could loosen the bolts and slide the whole casing round.

Any way the end result is good thank god!!!! no police siren in the distance and it seems to boost ok! The actuator is higher up on this unit and only just clears the fuel lines running behind it i also had to bend the heat shield a bit to get that on!

I guess it will do for now i'll see how long it lasts!! but with the bits i had to do for the mot at least i didnt have to spend half a grand on a new one!!

Ill be glad to have a day off that is not spent under the bonnet of my bloomin car!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh and the gasket for the pipe was 54p from stealers so all good there!!
