Default strange thing happened on motorway

strange thing happened to my car today on the motorway 1.8vvt sri . i had to brake suddenly and really hard to aviod a crash , i was only doing 30mph as i was approaching an island at the end of the motorway . anyway i slammed on and steered towards the hard shoulder i felt the ABS kick in and it stopped great then suddenly after i released the brakes the power steering went all stiff , never got any fault lights come up or anything just went stiff , so the traffic stopped again so i stopped the car and restarted it and it was back to normal , but just seems strange why would the power steering go stiff after braking hard ? weird

Either the CIM turned the power steering off or the power steering pump itself switched off

Don't worry about it, until it happens more often

When I had my car for just a few weeks it did it, was reversing out of tyre fitting at the time
Noticed how heavy the steering was, so popped the bonnet
Got back in the car and closed the drivers door, and just as I did that the warning light appeared
Switched off the engine and restarted, all was well

Several months later the warning appeared, but the power steering was working
Eventually traced to a failed CIM

More worrying is if on restarting the power steering does not respond
That is what I had two weeks ago and the pump needs replacing

i have had the car almost 2 years and it has never done anything like it before , all i can think was the quick swerve under hard breaking triggered a bad reaction with the steering , hope it does not raise its ugly head agian lol

The power steering pumps are demanding and if the engine is idling at the time then, quick abrasive use of steering wheel can catch it out. Have the alternator checked though.
