    Default Basic fault finding lesson

Right so I've been dikked in work to give a lesson to drivers a basic fault finding lesson on weds for 40 mins to a group of about 15.

Looking to see if you guys have got any ideas?

It's in military landrovers etc so it's all diesels

    So far I've thought of-
Non start- flat batt ( volt check etc)
Charge warning light- check belt, voltage
Glow plugs- light goes out, voltage

Other things I've thought is not to rely on fuel gauge

Sudden loss of power and black smoke- check turbo hoses etc

Any other ideas for basic lesson to give them an insight?

Hi Critch - have you a Haynes manual, any one will do as long as it covers diesel engines?

In the back there's a few pages on fault finding which might help.

Good luck, let us know how you get on .

EDIT - also found this http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=1639

A think the main idea behind it is so the boys arnt taken off the shop floor to go and do something simple like jump starting etc.

And if on exercise or what ever the drivers can do basic checks and be able to ring us up and say alt belt has snapped or what ever.

But most drivers dont know their arse from their elbow. So I personally don't see the point in it. But I well.

In me head am planning it as if am talking to my misses. Who can't even drive. So anything on top should be a bonus.

Cheers guys. Some good ideas their.
They should. A say "should" know how to check fluids as their surpoused to "first parade" the vehicle but was thinking of showing them to make sure.
Because we had a lad whos just done his mechanics training. So straight out training to us. And he didn't know how to open the Bonnet :O

And yeah tony a see what your saying but we dont have a sape wheel compartmeant their fasended to outside of the wagon seriously tho only drama is it'll be my luck an some officer will want to join in an not see the funny side lol.
