confused 3.0 V6 CDTI totally dead.

    Hi All,

My 2004 3.0 V6 CDTI has been SORN for the past eight months as my company has provided me with a string of (fairly dull) cars, however I'm moving house and need to get it MOT'd and back on the road. I've been starting it fairly regularly while it's been sat on the drive, although admittedly not as regularly as you should, but when I've gone to start it this morning I've found it to be pretty much dead... I'll make a list of what I've done rather than write a long tale of woe:

    - 1st attempt to fire up ignition: Dash lights came on but got a bunch of click-click-click sounds from the engine compartment (alternator presumably?). Thought battery might just be flat as the headlights were fairly dim when I switched them on.

    - Hooked battery up to the girlfriend's car with jump leads and let it charge for a good 20 minutes.

    - Attempted to start engine but still got the clicking sound and after a couple of attempts to fire it up the electronics such as the dash lights and info display started flickering dimly and eventually went out, suggesting the battery was now completely drained.

-Attempted to start the engine one last time and was no longer even getting the clicking sound. Central locking / windows / anything that uses power now dead too.

    - Confirmed battery was flat by hooking it up directly to the girlfriend's car and trying to start it - no sign of life.

    - Hooked girlfriend's car battery up to the Vec and tried to start it, no sign of life either (not even the clicking sounds)

Can anyone suggest what the problem might be? Is my alternator goosed? (but then why doesn't the working battery even make it click?). Anything else I should try to do or that I might have missed in order to find the guilty party?

    Thanks in advance

    Hutch

What size battery has the other car? You might need a bigger one on a longer jump if its dead flat.

You will need a heavy duty battery to start a V6 cdti bud

Hahaha I checked the voltages but didn't even think to check the rating - turns out it's a 20Ah no chance!

I'm gonna need a bigger battery. I'll report back when I've found one.

    Cheers for the quick replies!

Yes, the handbook also advises not to charge the battery from another vehicle (for this engine)
The solution would be remove the battery and have it recharged
A new a battery for this type is not cheap, a new OE battery comes in at around £150

Yep, battery size seems to be the (really) obvious thing I didn't take into account... it's a 1.0 Micra from 1999

yes, after market batteries are cheaper, however an OE one is well expensive and is covered by a 5 year warranty
