    Default Which brake discs/Pads???

    Morning all,

I just had my standard Veccie C 1.9 150 MOT'd. Had a broken front coil spring so had to have that replaced to pass. Also told that ALL four discs and pads are knackered and that because of new rules they couldn't fail it, but ordinarily they would of done.

Said that new MOT rules mean they can only fail them if they have cracked, but they are rusted right up apparently.

Anyway, as a result, I need to replace them, so I figure if I have to replace them anyway, I may as well improve them.

So just after finding out what my options are and what people usually uprate to on these motors???

Most common upgrade is to fit 314mm discs on the front and 292mm on the rear but you need to change the calipers and caliper carriers too.

You can take the fronts up to 345mm (VXR brakes) but they get a lot more pricey.

I had a feeling i'd seen something about having to change calipers etc as well.

Guess I need to decide if I want to upsize on the discs etc or just get better ones.

Will the 314mm discs fit in under the standard wheels etc? No issues there is there?

Don't want to buy them if I go down that route to find that I then need bigger wheels to get them fitted. lol.

Yeah I guessed that may be the case, Not even sure what the standards are but pretty sure they aren't 17's.

Might just have to be upgraded standard sized discs then I think!

How did it pass the brake efficency test if their knackered?

Discs could be scored, lipped etc. Does it pull up ok or squeal? Or is the garage after work?

It does squeal a bit under braking, which has been slowly getting worse.

I don't think they are just looking for work, it's the garage I use for all my stuff and they've always been good to me, they know they will get plenty of work out of me without having to make stuff up.

Apparently though the new MOT rules mean that a garage can't fail you on the MOT unless the discs actually have cracks etc or something to that effect. Something that was put in place because garages kept doing exactly what you have mentioned, failing them to get more work in through the door.

He said the back discs especially only have about 5mm of brake surface that the pads are grabbing on to properly or something to that effect, the rest of the disc is rusted and crap.

It was standing for a few months earlier in the year though as it blew up just after I bought it and I had to fight the garage I bought it from for a full repair or small claims etc, eventually got them to sort it but it did take a while. Most likely didn't help.

314's will fit under some 16s but you need to watch where the balance weights are. How about 302's. Not much of an upgrade but much cheaper than 314's

I'll be honest mate, I don't even know what the standards are on my car! lol.

Just after general opinion on best upgrade, so the standards don't matter too much to me! lol.

Would 302's also need new calipers and carriers?
