Default Which are best tyres for a 2.2SRI (2003)

Having been quoted some silly prices, £185 for Goodyear NC5s from a well known high street chain. my local VX masterfit will do them for £135 for one or less for more in region of £I25 for four.
So I started to look on the Net at mytyres.co.uk and found these:

    Goodyear
    Summer tyres
    EAGLE NCT 5
    215/50 R17 91V
    With mytyres.co.uk only £ 99.80

    Firestone
    Summer tyres
    Firehawk TZ 200 Fuel Saver
    215/50 R17 91W in preparation
    *
    With mytyres.co.uk only £ 100.10

    Goodyear
    Summer tyres
    EAGLE NCT 5
    215/50 R17 91W
    *
    With mytyres.co.uk only £ 103.20

    Goodyear
    Summer tyres
    EAGLE NCT 5
    215/50 R17 95W XL
    *
    With mytyres.co.uk only £ 117.70

    Goodyear
    Winter tyres
    EAGLE ULTRA GRIP GW-3
    215/50 R17 91W , M+S marking
    *
    With mytyres.co.uk only £ 124.40

but its thrown up more questions - like which one are the VX dealer trying to sell me seen as there are a few different NC5s - The last ones (eagle ultra grip) look like amazing tyres for grip in wet / dry - has anyone come across them?

Mine are 215/50/17's too and I have Michelin Primacy's at the mo which are pretty good. The stealer wanted £208 each for them LOL but ATS did all four for £125 each.

The Goodyear's are good but I find the Michelin's have more control on wet roundabouts but they are very similar.

I think I read that the ultra grip tyres may only last for around 6K miles

Recently put Vredestein Ultrac's on my SRi. Without doubt the best tyres I've ever had. Outstanding in the wet. Totally transformed the handling of the car. If the come in your size then go for them

You may want to check which tyres have the rim protectors.

The last time I bought NCT 5s’ they did not, but I think I heard someone saying that they are now a feature on the NCTs. It may save a bit of damage if you get close to a kerb.

    As Parapaul said. Stop.

Don't bother pricing up the 215's, they are bluddy stupid money. A recomended alternative is the much more sensibly priced 225 / 45 / 17's. I'm running Goodyear Eagle F1's on mine, so far after approx 8000 miles, I have 8mm left on the rears and 7 mm on the fronts. Mainly motorway miles though, but even so.

Handily the 225's being that bit wider take the brunt of any kamikaze kerbs too!

Being as stupid git with no knowledge of tyres and wheels and who has always changed his car before its needed new tyres, will 225 / 45 / 17's fit ok instead of 215 / 50 / 17's and will it alter the rolling diameter thus throwing the gearing out? - HELP lol

They're spot on matey. They even recommend them as an alternative in the handbook! Might want to get the car Tech 2'd for the new size to change the speedo reading, but even without the difference is very slight.

I'm well pleased with them on mine, put it that way! In fact, stop asking questions, just go and order them!

    Goodyear
    Summer tyres EAGLE F1 GS-D3
    225/45 R17 91Y BSW, VSB * With mytyres.co.uk only £ 78.20

    Toyo
    Summer tyres PROXES T1-R
    225/45 ZR17 94Y RF Rim-protection * With mytyres.co.uk only £ 82.20

    Dunlop
    Summer tyres SP SPORT 9090
    225/45 R17 91Y Rim-protection * With mytyres.co.uk only £ 82.80

    Just a few suggestions!
