    Default LOUD grinding noise?

    Evening all

I was hoping some of you mechanical minded folk might be able to help me with an unusual noise coming from my N/S front wheel...

There has been a worsening and now unbearably loud noise coming from the passenger side ever since my other half picked a fight with the back end of the number 82 bus.

I had to replace a wishbone (as it was folded in half) a drop link (as it was bent) and a track rod end (as it was in two peices) but the car has not been right since.

As soon as it was back up and running there was a very slight rubbing noise, almost as if the brake was catching or the disk was warped, which turns into a droaning noise at speed.

Its the same sort of rubbing/grinding noise now 3 months on but its consederably worse, same sort of frequency as the wheel turns at slow speed and then loud and shaking the skcollob off the car at speed.

I'm thinking wheel bearing but there is no play in the wheel (other than what I assume is the steering rack/track rods) definately not like old fashioned bearing play...

I was also suspecting CV joint as the inner gaitor has fell to pieces but its not a knocking sound I would expect from a CV.

Doesnt seem to be much play in anything atall i.e droplink, ARB bushes, balljoint or trackrod.

    Any ideas from anybody?

    Thanks all, Matt

Wow sorry that was alot to read,

Did forget to mention though that cornering wise it is alot worse when turning right i.e loading the N/S wheel... and alot better turning left i.e loading the O/S wheel, probably worth mentioning lol

if it wasn't for your car having a crash ..i would of said it might be something as simple as the dust guard catching ...
you could try prizing it away abit with a screw driver .. but other than that ,no idea

Have you checked the pads to see how low they are? As wear indicator is on that side?

Could be dust guard, but then with car having the crash could be other things aswel :-/

Pads look fine still loads of meat on them, bit of a lip on the disks but nothing that would ordinarilly cause an issue...

I'm hoping its not coming from back in the diff or anything like that, to be honest I just cant place it atall I've spent hours underneath lol but as long as the wieght is off the wheels there is no noise

if your wishbone was so severely damaged then replace the lot , strut , strut top bearing , driveshaft , this along with the parts you have replaced should solve it .

jack up both wheels and turn them , if its noticeable in both sides (have someone hold opposite wheel) then it is most likely to be the planet gears in the diff :-(

I was wondering whether the strut top bearing would cause any noise but I couldn't see why it would. The wishbone was litterally folded as the wheel wash pushed back in the wheelarch so I dare say the strut could be bent...

Is the driveshaft likely to be damaged? I would have thought the CV joints would take the hit?

Also The reason I'm thinking bearing or CV joint is that they would be getting worse, where I cant see why a bend or damage suspension component would get worse? any thoughts?

Thanks for the help guys, gould to have some ideas bouncing round with people who sound like they know what they're talking about lol

Also cant really feel much with the car jacked up lol bit of a nightmare trying to fault find...

Although with the wheels off it feels slightly rough turning the brake disk by hand, not really sure what it felt like before hand though but its not something I would normally worry about if I wasnt having these vibrations.

Would anything in the gearbox be affected by turning or loading the wheels?
