Gear stick going into neutral problem

Hi people, great forum, I've had a look at a few posts for an answer to my problem... Lots of info but not entirely sure of a few things...

The car is a 2005 (76k miles) signum with a 6 speed manual box (F40 looking at haynes).

The problem suddenly happened one morning, the gear stick when you pull it out of 2nd for example and let go, it would spring into neutral, so you can slip it into 3rd etc...

But now it wont move side to side unless you really give it a good push either way, it has no issues going forward/back into gear, you just have to do it slowly.

I've had the gaiter etc off to have a look, and i think, looking at it, the spring on the left hand side has snapped or slipped off, its quite loose.

I was wondering if it was possible to just replace the gear stick module (for which Vx want £204!!!!) with a 2nd hand module off ebay etc. is there any difference with the facelift/pre facelift modules and would i need to do any linkage adjustment?

Bit of a long shot, but changing the gearbox oil might help a little? A cheap thing to try.

But it does sound more mechanical, from what you describe though.

Fluid levels are good, changed a few months a go, reduced the amount as Vx advised for the service. Its just suddenly happened.

Has your linkage from gearstick to the gearbox gone out ? One of the cables slippd ? There is a way of checking by looking at the gearbox end levers to see what they point to and see if your gearstick is in the matching position. Need an expert to tell you exactly how.

Linkage could be dry I had this on a previous car (zafira gsi) were there was no spring from gear range to gear range few sprays of lithium Greece on all linkages problem was sorted linkages were under the battery tray on the zafira don't now about the signum hth

I've gone as far as unbolting if off of the floor, which is a seats out, carpet out job, then there was just 2 cable clamps to unfasten to totally remove it...

Nothing has fallen in or around the selectors or gear box? A mate was driving his golf home one night and he lost some of his gears. Limped it home, all panicked that the box was shot, got up the next day in daylight to find a bit of plastic from somewhere had fallen and jammed in between the selector forks
