    Default Which oil?

    Hey,

    I've got a 2003 Vectra 2.2 non-direct SRI

My oil light has come up so could do with topping it up.

    Which oil should I get?

    5W30 fully synthetic or 0W40?

    Cheers

You really need to put what ever's already in it.

If your not sure will be worth doing an oil change. On a nine year old car (same as I've got) use 10W40 Semi Synthetic from Vauxhall.

You really need to get some oil in asap. If the oil light has come on you are really low. I was once told, any oil is better than no oil. Not to sure how well full and semi synthetic oil mix tho.

My other car. 1972 1641cc slammed beetle. On the road finally!!

if the oil light is on then its best to get some oil in rather than worry about mixing different oils. You'll find everyone has their own preference when it comes to oils. Personally im a fan of 10w40 but its easiest to just ring up your local vaux parts counter and they'll tell you whats recommended for your engine

I was in Cheshire Oaks tonight and the light came on as I was driving to there... luckily there was a Sainsburys that was open so popped in and got some Castrol 10W40 Part Synthetic 2lt for £15, thought it wasn't too bad for Castrol! Didn't wanna buy Sainsburys own as been told its like chip fat and not good for the engine at all.

So panic averted for now, just need to get a proper service on her as I am due one now

    When you say "oil light"

Are you referrng to light that indicates low oil level

    or

the light that indicates low oil pressure?

If it's low oil level, then pull out the dipstick and see how much is in there. Chances are it will be just above the min mark and therefore your engine is still safe.

If however it's the oil pressure light, then either you have a faulty sensor, OR very little oil in the engine and damage could occur by continuing to drive it.

Either way, regularly check your oil level.
