    Default Cam Phaser problems

    Hi there,

My Vectra C 1.8 VVTI has just got a problem, 58 plate with 40K on.

There is a ticking noise from under the bonnet and a loss of power, if you are on the cruise control and come to a hill it slows right down and you have to change down. There are no lights on the dash.

The dealers have just rung me and said it is something to do with the cam phasers has any body else had this problem

They want £450 to sort it out if removing the filters does not work nightmare! Warranty ran out in November

    Has anybody else had this?

Can't help with problem, but title intrigued me, the idea Vec's could be/are fitted with Phasers! Any chance of Photon torpedoes as well....

    Phasers set to stun!

Edit, try to get more info, as Cam Phasers is not a proper term for what wrong with the car.. Might be at a thought the Cam is out of phase with the crank due to the timing chain slipping a tooth/link which £450 might be the right price to have the chain and tensioners changed

    Panic over!

So guys the 1.8 VVT has not one phaser but two, there are solenoids that are used to adjust the valve timing one for each cam shaft. They work of oil pressure there are 3 plastic filters around the channels that let the oil in these get blocked so the oil pressure falls and the cam is then advanced and retarded causing a knocking noise that sounds like it comes from the head and loss of power.

Luckily removing of these filters did the trick car back to normal and the dealer only charged 75 quid.

    Better than £450.00

    Google "cam phaser solenoid"
