Default Annual renewal of car insurance

    Well everything looked as normal
Final Direct Debit payment taken, so cancelled and confirmed with (previous) insurance company that the Direct Debit had been cancelled and would not be renewed
The usual emails, insurance due and quotes
Then the letter with renewal quote, followed the following day by Direct Debit cancellation (and all the bumf that goes with that, such as policy may be cancelled if no payment is made)

Started getting quotes at the end of December 2011
Went to the best quote and they had CLOSED their website, on 03 January, arrgh!

So went to a few others

Noticed they all now have some additional requirements :
Before proceeding we now require to receive copy of documents

    What a nightmare
Had to dig out the Driving Licence, renewal, and last years policy
Then scanning and copying each of those
These then had to be uploaded AFTER payment

A process that used to take half an hour took me nearly three times that!

On the plus side, this years insurance is CHEAPER than last years, not by much though
Plus I get breakdown cover which my current policy does not have

Last years policy was £600 (nil excess)

Endsleigh renewal £830 (nil excess, but the usual increases on the compulsory excesses)
Local broker wasn't even able to match the renewal, at £1120 with a £150 excess
The last time I had a local broker find a policy for me was 1995

I've been using argoscompare for the last three years, but they've just pulled the plug
Aviva and Direct Line were around £750
    tescompare was £580
    moneysupermarket £560
No details as yet who the underwriter is

Cant even remember the last time I was asked to provide proof of NCB, never mind a copy of my driving licence.

ouch....I had a renewal quote for 609 from direct line- which went up to 670 when paying monthly...... and I live in london (A nice ish bit) lol

I went to money supermarket just now and got a new policy from hastings direct for 436 which went up to 501 all in with the paying monthly charges....

both the policies offered have the usual 150 compulsory excess(but 0 voluntary), legal cover, hire car, windscreen cover, etc ec.......

I'm over the moon!!!!!!!!!! That 170 is better in my pocket than theirs ;-)

Yes, Wendy had been insuring with the AA, I'd been with Saga and then through Swinton's, Had an online quote from Hastings on one of the comparison sites last year, Swintons said we can't match it, no-one can understand why Hastings are quoting so low - Wendy's insurance this year, now with Hastings, has gone from £47 pcm with AA to £25 pcm for same cover.

This is a typical policy to renewal
A long time ago the renewal was pretty much the same as a new policy, but it only happened once
However, as always the policy terms are less favourable

If it wasn't for the high mileage and business use my premium would be much lower, with 20 years driving licence and 9 years NCB the discounted base premium is £310

Equally, the three accidents / claims (one non-fault, one animal, and onw windscreen repair) from 2006 don't need to be disclosed any more, yet this made little difference to the premium
The difference worked out at about £35

Holy moly this has turned into a farce!

    email this morning
    09:49
Unfortunately we are unable to insure your vehicle
reason : vehicle does not exist
We have now processed a full refund to your Credit Card which will appear within 7 days
Plus all the blah, blah, not insured, etc

    09:50
Welcome, please find attached your documents and Certificate of Motor Insurance

    I didn't find out until 16:00
    So phoned them
"er, er, can we phone you back"
So waited an hour, nothing, so phoned them back
"we are still investigating, can we phone you back"
"Can you confirm if I am insured or not?"
    "We are unsure"
    "Excuse me?"
"Although your vehicle appears on the database there is a record it has been written off, as a result it should not be possible to insure it, we are still investigating"

So took my Certificate along to the local Police Station
"Looks fine to me, I'll check"
Waited 10 minutes, "Yeah your policy comes up on MID
However there is a marker on your vehicle, looks like it has been cloned
We already know you have the original vehicle"
I then provided information about an accident from November 2010, looks like that is when this occured
Basically, the officer has referred it further and will get back to me tomorrow
Looks like a visit to the Road Policing unit is in order...

    Was nice to know!
