    Question 1.9CDTi engine question

I can remember reading something in the forums about a process which the engine management system runs periodically (possibly to do with removing carbon build up in the engine). There was mention about poor running and increased mpg whilst the process was running. I guess I witnessed this the other week during my daily 70 mile commute as it ran like a bag of ****!!!. Can someone explain what this is all about and point me to the posts which discussed this. I cannot remember the subject of the posts I read but I seem to remember a 3 letter abbreviation (like EGR or DPF) but may have been something else.

    My car has done 33k.

A regen should not make the car run badly, At a random guess check your 3rd injector wiring, failing that clean the egr and boost sensor and check the rubber pipes going to the turbo actuator

It will make the car run poorly as the fueling is changed so that exhaust gas temperatures are raised to 700C. Fuel consumption increases to maintain enough performance and clear out the DPF too. It should however cause the engine to stall or run in such a way that the car is undrivable. The car won't have the best of mpg during a regen.

If it happened for a while then I would say all is fine. The 3rd injector loom issue would cause the car to misfire, have poor throttle response and prone to stalling. Also engine management light would also come up.

Thanks for your prompt replies. Have searched dpf regen and understand much better now. How does the management system decide when to do the regen, does it depend on how its driven or what?

    Thanks again

It determined at a set mileage and the pressure difference across the DPF. THe greater the pressure difference the more it needs a re gen - which ever situation comes first, so if it suits up quickly it will re gen more frequently.
