Default Anyone into martial arts? Advice needed...

I'm a 29 year old bloke who's pretty unfit, a bit overweight thanks to too much booze (not just because of Xmas/NY!) and I fancy a change.

I'm not really a going to the gym kind of guy, I get bored to tears with running on a treadmill or cycling. I only get into physical fitness if there's an "aim", ie: game of tennis/football etc.

Saw kickboxing on the telly a few days ago and fancied giving it a try, but need someone to give me a bit of a boost. Afterall, don't want to make an tit of myself or get my head kicked in!

Anyone know if it's realistic for a guy of my age, who's never done any sort of martial art, to get into the sport (purely for fun I might add, I don't expect to be any good!).

I'd love some advice if any of you are into this sort of thing.

    Cheers!

Are you kidding, at just 29!? There are guys 70yr+ who are very adept at martial arts. You've got all the time in the world to learn, train and get good at it.
Just do it if you're interested. Loads of options.

Always been a tad on the "large" side and took up kick boxing a few years ago. Only went to give it a go and ended up going 3 times a week for quite a few years. I was training up until about 35 is and the only reason I gave up is because of changed work hours due to promotion, other wise I would still be training, I've been looking at other schools to go to but can't find anything local enough to fit my hours...

Took a lot of effort and managed to get my black belt even though still being "large"

Lots of people just do it for the exercise rather than for wanting to have a rumble (although it can be good fun if you're both up for it) Also helps to relieve some day to day tension etc...

I'd recommend giving it a try as you have nothing to lose and it'll also let you meet a whole new group of people.

A lot of the enjoyment depends on the classes, students and of course the instructor, I was lucky and had a good group of people to train with that turned into a good group of mates.

On the up side as well it also means you get more confidence in dealing with situations if necessary and giving people a good ol or a if they deserve it.....

Been doing Shotokan Karate for years, I'm 35 now. I'd highly recommend any Martial Art. Don't worry about age, we had a couple of new starters recently both in their 40's.

1st lesson back after Christmas tonight, hopefully there will be some more new starters! Always good to see new faces.
