    confused P0243 - Over boost

    HI there,

Need a bit of help if possible please. When driving my 04 Vectra 2.0 and hard accelerating around 3k revs, the spanner light comes on. I connected my Op-com and it came up with fault code P0234 - Over boost. After looking on various websites. Today i checked the wastegate on the turbo this moves freely, Removed the intake manifold and de-clogged it and the same with the EGR valve. Cleaned the boost pressure sensor, Checked all intake hoses and vacuum pipes they seem ok.

I've seen on one forum that extending the wastegate rod can cure the fault, but is this not just masking over a underlying fault or should i try this as the next step. Any help would be very appreciated.

    Regards Harrison

Indeed extending the waste gate will mask the problem until the cause worsens... On mine it turned out to be the integrated dump valve diaphragm which had tiny slits in it... Under higher load it would allow the car to drop into LHM at the most I opportune moments...I.e. mid overtake

You can buy a replacement repair kit/diaphragm from vx ...it's about £100

And it's bolted onto the turbocharger

Thanks for the info. I don't really want to mask over a fault or spend 100 notes just yet ha ha. I've been looking overnight and this seems a really common fault. Think there is two more cheap trys i will do first remove and clean out the turbo and then replace all the vacuum hoses, suppose while I've got turbo off I can check the diaphragm, thanks. Does anyone know the diameter of vacuum hose I need is it 3mm.

    Regards

I'm confused - Deztroyer you're obviously talking about a petrol 2.0T, whereas Harrison says he's cleaned EGR valve - which the 2.0T doesn't even have, so are you referring to a diesel 2.0?

There is one think I noticed while driving the car this morning, since I've cleaned out the egr and inlet manifold, the car feels like it wants to pull/accelerate when my foot is flat down in revs like 1500-2500 but it feels like something is holding it back. This is when the spanner light isn't on either.

No smoke at all, checked all hoses yesterday looked fine. could it be the turbo clogged up or vacuum hoses split witch I've heard mentioned in the past?

You can check the operation of the wastegate. Get someone else to start the engine whilst watching the wastegate actuator.
The vacuum operated solenoid (on the turbo) should pull the wastegate shut as soon as the engine has started and it should slowly release the wastegate when the engine is turned off.
This will show if the actuator is sticking.

The vac sol is operated by the electrically operated vac switch by the airbox.
If you can hear the vac switch (you might 2, 3 or 4 vac switches) chattering then it needs cleaning internally.
Spraying switch cleaner / isopropal alcohol into it might help. I dismantled them and cleaned them, but it is easy to break the locking tabs.

Without a vacuum the waste gate stays open and lets the exhaust gases by-pass the turbo.
So overboost might be wastegate closed when it should be open.

I have seen a max boost demand of 199Kpa, but an actual, momentary, boost of 244Kpa.

Popular subject on here, these fault, I have had to have my turbo rebuilt.

Other things to consider are Decat (bash it out, leave exhaust looking the same) and partial blocking of the EGR.

Fixed!!! I got the misses to help me check the operation of the wastegate it wasnt moving when the engine was started or stopped, I have just replaced all the vacuum hoses and now all is good, think one want sealing correct as can't see any splits. In the two years owning the car it's never ran so good, probably with the combo of the clogged inlet/egr and the vacuum hoses. Thanks for all the advice tony and everyone else.
