    Default Y30DT inlet manifold.

A curiosity question - why is my cast aluminium inlet manifiold so black and dirty/greasy?

I'm thinking one of two things:

    1) The oil breather pipe (black plastic thingy) that goes to the inlet pipe of the turbo is dragging in oily vapour which we can't avoid (positive crankcase ventilation PCV?) or,

    2) There's an oil leak on the turbo cooling system .

If we didn't have a breather pipe, how on earth can things be so oily in the manifold?

Just to further confuse me, the pipe from the outlet of the turbo to the intercooler doesn't have oily walls, neither does the pipe from the intercooler to the inlet manifold . Are the walls of the inlet manifold rougher than the air pipes, thereby giving the oily vapour something to grip onto?

    Thumbs up

The dry black powdery film that builds up in the inlet manifold at the engine end is from the EGR valve. When the EGR valve is prompted to open by the ECU, " its command signal " the EGR valve opens and allows spent/exhaust gases to re-enter the engine via the inlet manifold. The oily slimmey black grunge found throughout the air intake system is from the pipe which vents the engine crankcase. Oil vapour droplets is passed under pressure along the pipe into the low pressure side of the turbo charger, and then leaving the turbo charger on the high pressure side. It is then deposited around the air intake system i.e intercooler and hoses and throttle valve/butterfly....

    Default

Equally, the EGR valve should only be open whilst the engine is warming and/or on low revs
As a result the gas passing through it is very slow, so the vapour can be attracted to the colder pipe walls

This is also why the pipe from the turbo does not get covered in oil, even though the gas contains oil, the gas passing through it is flowing so fast
