    Default z18xe engine swap

    Hi guys, Thanks in advance........

My friend (work collegue) has bought a 02 plate Vec c 1.8 16v on 103k miles, the guy previous said "he'd changed the timing belt and water pump"
with the friend not knowing alot about cars, took his word for it.
I got a call to have a look at a squeeking noise coming from the timing end of engine, but before i got there the water pump had lost all its bearings, fell apart and skipped several teeth on the timing belt.

I have got new belt kit, and water pump, replaced all these (go on admit it your thinking, he's not done a compression test......)
    well you'd be wrong lol.............

ALL 4 pots have NO compression, so with all the timing marks online and tensioned up, we decided to try it anyway, as the engine was dead.
the engine turns freely but not attemping to fire.

So its looking like a engine swap.

    Now the question is.......

We know the engine is a Z18XE (its stamped on it)
but there seems to be 2 types of this said engine. 1. has the mount on timing side of the engine, and the other has not.

Before i buy another engine for the car, im wanting to know........

    1. will both engine types fit (with bits changed across)
    2. what parts would need changing across ie engine mount etc

    Ste

Might be worth your while just whipping the head off fella, checking the damage first, a few bent valves will be easier to replace(even the head). You could even get a second hand head from UPull in York for £40+vat if they are reasonably close buy.

I'd just swap the head, cheapest one I saw on ebay was this-

    But 3 or 4 others below £150.

As above whip the head off. It's a lot less work than changing the whole engine aswel.

we were going for the fact that we could get the enigne in and possibly running within a day, not having to wait for gaskets, bolts and the head.

Why would you have to wait for gaskets & bolts?...they can be bought over the counter before starting the job!

Personally I would try and get the same engine if possible it just makes it simplier. Also I cannot advise on the differences between the two engines but I have swapped a 1.8vvt engine over (same block different head I think) so if you need any advice just pm me.

One thing I would recomend is make sure you have some torx spanners for the passenger side engine mount. It is a bit tight for sockets! Also there is enough room the leave the AC condensor connected. I cable tied mine to a block of wood which was cable tied to the sub frame which eliminated the need to regas it....
