    Default Cigarette Lighter

Whats the difference between a standard 12v cigarette lighter and the non lighter type accesory port wich i have, are they not both 12v ?

would the connections still be the same if i was to buy a standard across the range cigarette lighter housing, i have tried to put an actual lighter in but it blows the fuses. thanks

The hole in the accessory socket is slightly smaller to prevent you inserting a ciggy lighter adapter.

The voltage and connections are the same though. Centre tap is +ve, and the other edge is -ve.

thanks for that Dave ,somehow ive managed to put a ciggy lighter straight in and it blew the fuse , however if i put in any chargeble unit it works fine , the one i have has got a flap over it so i presume its an accesory port

Yep, flap is an accessory socket, and not meant for ciggy lighters.

Ciggy lighter port has a clip in the bottom to hold the centre of the lighter element while it heats and releases it when it's done.

Accessory socket has no clip in the bottom and purely for things like sat-nav's, in-car chargers for phones etc

Are the cables the same size to allow for the larger current from a lighter? Hence the fuse size that keeps blowing to protect the cables?
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Both the same 10A supply. The only difference is the shape of the socket so it allows the cig lighter to disconnect when hot. Accessory plugs are designed to fit cig lighter sockets, but cig lighters won't work in accessory sockets (and as you found - can blow the fuse if you do manage to get one to go in)

My 1991 Pajero has both cig lighter and accessory sockets on the centre console (acc sockets have hinged covers, cig lighter has lighter unit), so it's not a new thing having two very similar but slightly different sockets.

My Vectra has a cig lighter, but it's just rattling around in the glove box, as I'm using the socket as an accessory socket for charging my phone etc.

I converted my cigarette lighter (pre-face so it had the ciggy lighter not accessory socket) into the accessory socket, takes a bit of fiddling and farting around to get it all to fit, but basically I have the accessory socket top with the original cigarette lighter and cigarette lighter lighting surround fitted into it.
