Default Engine Temp Gauge not quite right

    Morning all

I've got a 1.8 petrol veccy. I've just changed the radiator as the old one leaked....

Now all seems well, except my temp gauge doesn't shift that much (just moves between 70-73 ish). Whe reading other threads it appears to be a stat problem, however I changed this about 6 months ago and it's been fine since. Also it's just strange how its happened after I've changed the rad and refilled with coolant.

Warm air comes out of the vents but not hot like I had before.

I ran the engine for a good 30 mins with the cap off to try and eliminate any air locks....

    Any suggestions would be welcomed!

    Thanks

Try pumping bottom hose again to ensure all air locks are out?

If your old radiator was corroded, you may have shifted a load of muck out into the cooling system that's now holding the thermostat slightly open. Might be worth taking the thermostat off, cleaning it up and testing it in a pan of hot water to see if it opens and shuts properly.

My 1.8 had a new thermostat in February, and it's sitting just below 80C a lot of the time when it's under 2C outside and I'm doing 60mph. It does go up to 85C if I'm stuck in traffic after a run though. But in the summer it was moving around up to 90C if I sat in traffic, and down to 80C if I'm moving. So I'm wondering if mine's slightly sticking now too - or whether the 1.8's cooling system does just vary in temperature a lot like that normally!

Sounds like your thermostat has failed again. Petrols should sit around 88-90C iirc and shouldn't fluctuate as you describe.

    Cheers guys.

The old radiator was corroded so I'll wip off the stat and clean it all out again....

Also I've read on other post that there is a bleed screw somewhere. If I'm barking up the right tree, can anyone tell me where it is?

    Thanks again

What is code of your engine? Z18XE or Z18XER?

My Z18XER has temperature gauge reading between 90 and 93 Degrees Celsius. When thermostat failed, temperature fall down to 80 Degrees Celsius (on open road) and was maximal 90 Degrees in town (but couldn't get to 93 Degrees).

    Best regards.

It's a Z18XE. However it now appears to be fixed!

Cheers for the info guys. Didn't do anything other than drive to work. The 20 miles of motorway appear to have solved said problem!

Mine weirdly is also staying above 80C again. Think I'll flush the cooling system and refill it in the New Year and see what happens, and maybe consider changing the thermostat again.
