Default Car won't start after drive.

    Hi Guys,

I've been lurking for a while, had plenty of useful info from you guys, now i've got an issue I can't find a solution for.

    Car is a 150bhp 1.9cdti 2006 exclusiv model.

As the title says, after i've driven anywhere, the car wont start. Symptoms are: the ECU/Engine management light won't light up, meaning the starter motor is never asked to do anything and making it impossible to get the car to turn over. AFter taking the key out and trying again, it will sometimes light up and then start as normal. But this can take 6 or 7 goes at turning the key in the ignition. If i've stopped and started a couple of times or more using the above method it will then refuse to start at all until the next day.

So no crank, no constant clicking, its just dead until its completely cold again.

When the ecu light fails to come on all other dash lights come on as normal, electric gadgets work, dab radio is fine. Its just this one little light not coming on that tells me something is wrong.

The car runs perfectly at all other times, no spluttering, no warning lights just this single very odd problem. I'm inclined to change the yellow starter relay in the fuse box. And I'm almost certain the ECU itself is fine due to no other issues or problems when driving. The car never stalls or falters once started.

Anyone had similar or heard of this before? If the starter motor solenoid had gone, would there be a constant clicking when trying to turn the key?

P.s> LAst night i'd just finished a 40 mile trip, when I got home i turned the engine off and then whilst still sitting in the car tried to start it, the ECU lit up just fine and the engine started. I then repeated this 4 or 5 times, each time it was fine. I then got out, locked the car... then heard an audible click from passenger side under bonnet. Went back in to car, tried to start... and no ECU light, no crank, no go. This morning, the car was willing to start again....Any ideas?

Maybe the battery is playing up?

Next time I go out and come back I can pop some jump leads on from another vehicle, if the battery was at fault then that would use the power from the other vehicle and it should go straight away right?

Surely, if the battery was playing up, it would not start when cold?

You said you can hear a click under the bonnet before it fails to start? Sounds to me like a relay switch somewhere

Yeah when the ecu light fails to come on if I listen carefully there is a clicking, i count three clicks and then silence... I don't know if this is normal as when the ecu light comes on, all the pumps start working and it drowns out the other sounds.
If it helps.. when I put fuel in her, I stop the car and then instantly turn the key back on again (i dont crank it) as the ecu will always light up if i try as soon as i've stopped, i then just leave the keys in and pay at pump!

I'm thinking to change the relays, there is a red one at the front which is a 12v 40a and then 2 yellow ones which are 12v 70a, plus a brown and white one.
The red one part no: is 24 438 887
    Yellow part no is: 90 226 846

I don't believe the brown and white ones have anything to do with ECU or starter.

Would you recommend replacing just the red one (ecu) or the yellow ones (starter+glow plugs)??

Could be the solenoid for the starter motor is on the way out. If you're hearing clicks sometime then something is obviously trying to do something.

Worst case could be the ECU BUT I would also check the wiring harness which goes round the engine is in good condition, it is not uncommon on this engine for the harness to chaif and become damaged. Areas to pay particular attention to are front of drivers wheel arch (near ECU) and down the back of the engine.

    Hi Chris,

Yeah I've tried both keys but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Bought the car second hand and both keys seemed fairly worn. You thinking the keys aren't turning the immobiliser off? Would I be looking for anything specific to tell me the immobiliser was staying on?
