    Default Accident Damage

Got a bit of a funky question for you.

My car was recently hit in the rear recently which has cracked the rear bumper, damaged the rear heat shield (sheared the two fixings and bent it) and snapped the front two supports for the flexi pipe. I have been driving the car however it does rattle on start up and knocks occasionally when going round corners. Car is a 2.2 (Z22SE C)

Now ironically the airbag light is randomly coming on. I will admit it has taken a week to do this and I have told the claim company this. Is off on start up and sometimes will come on as soon as I move the car, and other times about 5-10 minutes into my journey. Ive since got a hire car through my claim management company as I feel this is accident related - it never done it before the accident so why should it do it after?

I also dont see why I should investigate the fault - rather let them tell me its not accident related rather than me sort it seeing as the accident wasnt my fault.

Do you agree or do you think im being too pushy and its not related and my car is safe to drive? Feel a bit guilty claiming for a hire car tbh...

Forgot to mention the full damage is

NSR lamp cluster cracked at reverse light,
    Rear Bumper
    Rear Impact Bar
    Rear Heatshield
    Rear Splitter
    Front Flexi Pipe
    Clamp for above

Theyve authorised the repairs and its due to be started in the new year. Car is going into the bodyshop tomorrow as the estimator needs more pictures of the exhaust. Also im going away and doing mileage over christmas so if I get hit again the cars going to be less safe than it was before?

I dunno just feel bad lol

Vehicle : Mk1 renault scenic... I know I know but it drives

    Trim : Basic

    Engine : 1.6 16v

    Year : 2003

Quite with In your right to ask for it to be repaired in my eyes.

And if it was me I wouldn't drive it until the fault is found as it's likelynthe airbagsnwould not deploy should the need arise.

It could be the rear shunt has rattled a connector loose or similar

If your cambelt snapped a week after the accident, would you say it was because you were hit up the rear? No. Same thing with this, the timing is just coincidental.

The closest air bags are the curtain ones in the rear so check the connectors on them. Perhaps the impact made the connector loose? The closest sensor is in the middle of the car so very unlikely to effect it.

However I think it is purely co-incidental. Any impact that would cause enough of a shock to effect them would completely destroy the car and it would not be driveable. These items are built to work after a MASSIVE impact so the connectors, wiring etc are designed as such. As the damage did not extend to an airbag area then I do not think it is the accident causing it. If the shock from the impact has effected them then to be honest I would think they were going anyway and it is a good job this happened so you found out...

I do agree with what your saying it just seems sooooo strange that its happened afterwards. The car was code read a week before to turn Xenon headlights on and there was no mention whatsoever about Airbag codes thats what makes me wonder.

My car has active headrests or something the bodyshop guy was saying - reckon this had something to do with it?

just let them know - most bodyshops wont let it go out with an airbag light on anyway - they will more than likely send it to vaux for the codes to be read etc and sort out as they'll just stick it on the repair bill
