    ===========================

    a lot are free of charge for basic info , like engine size , colour , fuel type , 5 or 4 door , when tax is due etc .

    so it's worth checking the basic info matches the number plate before you procede further for nowt . .

    and then they charge you extra for , finance , insurance claim info etc .

    finance , insurance and police interest might only show up if it's actually been recorded by professionals .

    e.g. = a bloke that has crashed his car into a lampost and then just bolted another bonnet , wings and bumpers on , himself , might not have gone through insurance or police , so there will be no record of it on a car data check ,

    that's where an A.A. or R.A.C. check comes in if you are unsuccessful with a data check , but have suspicions .

    The H.P.I. company is usually a good car check , it can be done online and sent to you via email or for an extra £ 2 / 3 , you can have a copy posted to you .

    Don't bother with any of those TextMyReg services, where they charge you £5 via your mobile phone. In 10 months time when you get a letter from a finance company saying they're siezing your car because the previous owner didn't settle the outstanding finance, you'll have no paperwork to show that you did a history check and no way of getting in touch with the company that gave you the all clear on the car.

    I found out the hard way that some of these text check ones don't even look to see if there is any finance on the car. I normally use the liked of the AA, RAC or HPi now.
    Now I need a turbo to keep up!

    yeah, i'd do the rac check - if buying private. £15.50 http://www.rac.co.uk/products-services/car-data-checks/
    when buying from dealer, there shouldn't be any need to do that. the dealer will be held legally responsible if they sell you a dodgy car.
