    Default Steering play/clunk

    Hey guys,

The cars been niggling over the past week. Noticed a clunk through the steering wheel when taking up the slack whenever turning the wheel its been getting worse gradually over the past week so phoned the local dealer (still under warranty) and they could'nt get it in today. Took it to a local independant garage to see if it was something simple and the guy came out for a drive and then got it on the ramp.

The bad news is there is playing in the steering rack or column somewhere and he reckons requires them to strip it down to diagnose where the problem lies. Just aswell its under warranty i imagine this would be expensive.

On a side note my dust guard on the back of the O/S/F disk had to get levered back for the second time in a year as it starting rubbing the disk again when turning left but at least thats sorted.

Anyone else has similar problems with the steering rack/column???

It may be what alot of people have experienced. The intermediate shaft (steering knuckle) develops a little bit of play. It's in at the engine bay side where the pinion hoes into the rack, Theres a bolt (10mm possibly) on a universal joint. I nipped mine about about 1/4-1/2 turn and it's been fine since. That was back in march. Mine is a cdti so don't know how much access you have in the engine bay

Thanks for that ill see what they say when it goes in. Mine may be different as you have electro hydraulic steering the Z28's have normal power steering. The mechanic who looked at it said there was nothing he could nip up with out a strip down so ill see what vauxhall say after new year.

Although the 2 different types of power assistance it's still the same basic set-up. rack and pinion or steering box (only usually in 4x4's and trucks) So it will have an intermediate shaft. It may be that you'rs isn't accessible given the amount going on under the bonnet. Hope you get it sorted soon tho
