Been getting a whine ofr the last few weeks. A friend suggested it may be a worn bearing and to put to Wynns in the oil to stop it. Never got around to it and tonight pressed the acclerator and was greeted with metal on metal noise. Drove like a granny home and didnt wind up the turbo at all.
Got off the phone from Vauxhall and they want £319+VAT + the old turbo which I thought wasnt to bad. The downside is that they wont get it until the new year :-(
Moved on to Local breakers and they can give me a 2nd hand one for £150. This is risky as its not been tested and could be close to fooked as my current one.
Then I moved on to ebay where I can get a reconditioned one with Garret parts for £330 but it wont get to me before xmas. I have emailed him to ask for faster shipping so hopefully he gets back to me asap.
There was also a brand new turbo availible but I think its not a genuine Garret turbo but a [ame="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190581775031&fromMakeT rack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en"]OEM [/ame]one for £380. He does 24 hour delivery.
So what d oyou guys think? A toss up between the recon for £330 or spend £50 more for a brand new turbo that might not be a garret original?
I called my local garage and they said they use a company called ITS Turbos in Yorkshire (quite far from Plymouth!). They recondition turbos with a fast turn around but I dont know what the cost will be. I'll call them in the morning. Anyone heard of / used them before?
UPDATE whilst typing this just heard back from the reconditioned turbo person and he can get it to me by thursday.
Opinions please
