Once the keys are coded to the car, then that's it.

In short, a 2nd hand fob can't be coded to another car.

No, they'd work fine on the cars they're coded to

I have bought second hand key fobs from eBay before. All you need to change is the transponder chip & the key blade that's in the key fob if you want to swap fobs. There is a procedure you need to go through to get replacement fob working to suit your car. I changed fobs to a VW flip key fob when I had my Seat Ibiza Fr Tdi. Once I had changed over the chip in the key fob I put my spare key in the ignition & used the new fob & key to open the door by turning the key in the door lock.
The procedure is detailed on any VW owners forum.

You need a new key as the transponder is built into the electronics and cant be swapped.

With the old Vauxhalls the car was coded to the key, With the new ones the key is coded to the car.

Yes, but that's for VAG cars, not GM.

I can't see the benefit, unless someone wants the carcase
The transponder won't be any use and they key element is already etched, so both parts would need to be replaced

Personally, drop the transponder in water and drill through the key (snapping it into at least two parts), then dump in the bin

I wouldn't even try to forward them to the new owner, as this may have changed, unless you are certain they are still the owner
You could perform a V5 check just to make sure, but the new owner has probably replaced the missing key, or had the transponders/locks replaced
