Angry Various Warnings + Electric Failure

Hi everyone, I appreciate that there are allot of posts about the spanner warning but I cannot find any that are similar to my issues.

I have a 2004 1.9 CDTi SRi 150, last night whilst driving home, the Spanned light came on followed by the ABS and (I think) Traction warning lights. They came on intermittently and went off again. When I arrived at my house, the call suddenly lost power, lights dimming and power steering non existent. After parking up the car would not start again, just clicking.

I came online and read a few things on here and other sites, left the car for an hour and then tried to start it again. The car started and drove fine for 30 minutes or so. I parked it up thinking it was just a glitch.

However, on starting it this morning. The spanner light came on again, no power steering and ABS / Traction lights on. The lights went off and the car drove fine for approx 20 miles. Then I lost power steering again, the dials on the dash froze at the speed/revs and temps, my lights went out and the speekers were making a weird electrical noise.

I managed to limp the car to work and again it would not start.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Dave

Sounds like it could be a cim problem or hopefully a dirty/loose abs plug in the engine bay.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Hi thanks for the replies, the battery light has not come on although the car's electrics have seems a little underpowered for a few days.

Where about's would I find the ABS plug?

Cheers again for the replies and help. The car would not start at all last night so I called the RAC. The guy tested the battery and alternator output, which as allot of you have said was the cause.

    New alternator ordered

The RAC guy got the car going and I drove it to my folks house a few miles away, the engine mgt light was on and on the display it said 'SAFE'. Once the alternator is changed will this resolve?

Basically the EMS has not been receiving enough power from the alternator, draining the battery
Many of the other systems also require a minimum amount of electrical power, so without this they have remained switched off

The SAFE message will remain once activated
Leave it until the alternator is replaced
You will need the passcard to reset the stereo, as the battery will have to be disconnected
Equally, depending on who carries out the repair they will need the passcard in order to reset the system (as well as removing the SAFE message)

Who is carrying out the repair?
Ask if they will include recharging the battery
There will also be loads of fault codes, don't pay for TECH2 as this will not be required (unless it is free and included)
The warning will remain until the car has been restarted about 10 times, then the stored codes will be overwritten and the warning will no longer appear
If the warning remains then take the car back
However I doubt you will require to do this, any decent garage will realise the warning is still on and check to make sure they are old codes, and even delete these for you

Once this has all been completed, if the battery is not being recharged take the car for a long run at high speed of about 30 miles (15 miles there and 15 miles back)
