Default What happened to baggin a bargain?

Dont know if anyone else has noticed when ebay started it was the place to go to bag a bargain, now the items companies sell on there are the same price as you could buy in the shops, and private sellers wanting silly money for things its just become far less appealing. Was watching wheeler dealers this morning and they were trying to neaten up an mid 80's scabby old bentley, mike went off to find some standard rear lights and a used front grill which purely consisted of some mesh. When he ask the guy how much he wanted for 2 rear lights and a mesh grill i nearly fell off my seat. £500 for 2 rear lights and £150 for some mesh, wtf, thing is mike paid it aswell. I thought hes gotta be having a giggle!!! I realise bentleys are a bit of niche market but could you justify 500 notes for some 25 year old plastic lights. Is this purely for the fact people are not buying so many new cars and trying to repair old meaning spare part costs have rocketed?

This is one of the ironies as things become more popular, the prices increase

When I was buying items from eBay UK over 10 years ago there were very few bids so prices were great
As popularity grew so did the number of bids
Equally, eBay UK has been refined to filter out those incorrectly spelt items, which you could pick up for silly money

Many traders also use eBay UK, as it is cheaper than an ecommerce website, plus attracts customers without much effort

There is a parallel here to taxes in the UK...
If it is popular, then it gets taxed, say no more!

As for prices on car parts, this really has become a joke
If you want on OE part on such a specialist car you really ARE going to pay for it
As an example are the injectors on the V6 CDTI
If you need to replace all six, then you may as well buy a new car!

Ebay is a bit of a rip off now, It seems as though their comission is around 10%, not sure how long its been like that, maybe thats why sellers have put up their prices aswell, add together the ebay fees and paypal fees and they are onto a nice little earner

Agree with you on that one pete, only good thing they have done is cap the commission on car sales, not that ive sold on there or ever likely to. Ive even tried looking on gumtree as its not so popular but not really much use. Its a bit of a pain with ebay prices being so high now, as in a post i made a week or so ago, the breakers down here are worse than useless so kinda got you by the short and curlies if you need something more specialised.

This is the lowest sellers fees have been for some time
They started off at nearly 20% for some categories
Equally, some categories are now just 1%

The biggest change recently was the removal of listing fees completely for some categories
The con here is what eBay UK call promotions for free listing, but the listing would be free anyway!

Anyway I've been using "BIN or Best Offer" for the last few years
Slightly more expensive, but the seller costs are fixed
Equally, the item remains listed for 28 days rather than 7 or 10 days

Really? Seems to have gotten dearer to me, I sold 2 items for my Brother inlaw on my account recently and both items (a phone and a 17th Edition test kit) came to around the £400 mark each, I think it was £840 all in all, ebay fees were £102!! only extras were that each item had a few pics added, but no more than 6-8 images per item..

Ebay and Paypal (the same company) seem to exist mostly now to make money for themselves. I rarely use it anymore.
