The problem is unless everyone has winter tyres then you still get blocked in with the gridlock and cant get anywhere.

My mrs has winter tyres on her little i10 the thing will go anywhere on the snow, it's small light and skinny winter tyres, it's our default winter car.

My Octavia Vrs has continental sportcontact 3 tyres brilliant in summer/wet atrocious when ice or snow is around.

Why are you driving in 1st gear with snow on the road surface?
I've driven on snow for the last few weeks and only twice had the warning light come on, and that was in 4th gear at 45mph, then when driving on some ice a few days later at 15mph in 3rd gear

I test drove the Hyundai i10 before I bought my Fiat 500. Very nice car and I ranked it highly for value for money. Very good

Got winter tyres on the 500 now and its already showing signs of promise for this winter

    Winter tyres, con
Just make sure you have tyres with at least 5mm tread
If they are between 2mm and 5mm, then have them removed until the dry weather returns (by that time those new tyres will have worn out)

Equally, they are only of use in complete mud and snow conditions, in normal conditions they will wear out faster
So you will need more new tyres, con

I am putting four new tyres on next week, these should last to March
I am putting two into storage, should I need to change them before March

I'm sorry, but i have to completely disagree here M8internet, as i have had winter (studless/snow - kumho) in the guise 215- 50-17 for the last 3 years and they are brilliant. I could not even get up the slightest incline in the normal (goodyear VX) tyres. I have even drivien past Range Rover 4x4's stuck on hills recently.... the tread pattern is completely different on a winter tyre and that is what keeps the grip (as well as the compound) and you on the road. i must say that without the winter tyres, i would not take the Vectra out in anything below 1deg C or ice. I have slipped and slided around too long in the past to not put winter tyres on nowadays.

I guess it's the old saying..... Don't knock it until you'ved tried it!
