    Default Stiff steering.

Hi, I've got an 06 vectra 1.9cdti. The problem I've got is when cold and for about the first 10 miles the steering goes very stiff in the straight ahead position, it seems as though the power steering has gone but with a lot of pressure applied it turns about 20 degrees then the power kicks back in and the wheel turns as normal. This only happens when cold and in the straight ahead position.

Any ideas please, its driving me mad.

Check the power steering fluid level, sounds like it might be a little low and taking a bit of time to fill the rack up properly. Alternatively you may have alternator issues as the power steering on the Vec is electro-hydraulic.

Alternator and fluid fine. This morning I left the car running for 30 mins before driving due to ice and when I drove off the steering was perfect, so looks like that's the answer waste diesel.

The power steering pump is the next port of call then m8. Pray it ain't that, they ain't cheap. Don't drive a car where the steering is impaired.
