    Default Brake squeal

Bit of an odd one this and sorry for the long post.

Started noticing a few weeks ago that the drivers side front wheel was squealing when the brake wasn't being applied. It would only do this once you'd driven a few miles, i.e. when the brakes got warm. As soon as I braked, the squeal stopped. I jacked the car up and tried to spin the wheel and it was stiff, therefore my first thought was that the caliper was sticking although I later found that when the brakes are cold the wheel spins freely. I checked the dust/crap guard and it definitely wasn't that catching on the disk. The drivers side front wheel was also slightly warmer than the passenger side.

I didn't have time to look at it myself originally so took it to a mechanic who checked the caliper over, confirmed it was fine, cleaned it all up and applied some fresh copper grease and I went on my way. It was fine again for a few days until it started squealing again. Same symptoms, the noise goes away when I brake.

So today myself and my step-dad had the caliper off again to see what the problem was. The caliper came off no problem and the piston retracted very easily, so it's definitely not that sticking. The problem we did find was that on the inner pad there was a heavy score on the bottom of the pad, about 2-3mm from the edge which had kind of left a V shape groove and a sharp edge of the bottom of the pad. From the look of it the pads have been overhanging the lip on the inner edge of the disk which has caused the scoring. So a grove has formed in the pad which appears to be binding onto the lip of the disk when they're hot.

One thing that is puzzling me is if the lip of the disk has scored the pad, why has it only started squealing now and didn't do it from when they were first fitted?

The pads were fitted by the place I bought the car from and it looks as though they either should've fitted new disks and didn't, or they've fitted the wrong sized pads (less likely I would've thought, if the lip wasn't there the pads would fit fine). I have found that the bottom edges of the pads are slightly chamfered, possibly done by the garage to make the pads fit over the lip on the disk.

My temporary solution has been to file the sharp edge of the pad down to remove the groove. I haven't managed to drive the car long enough to get the brakes decently hot but the squeal has gone to an extent, it started doing it again a little which I'm guessing is because the lip has started to score the pad again so I'll give it a few days and it's bound to be squealing away again.

What's best for me to do? Try and skim the lip of the disks (and possibly new pads as well), or just to (hopefully) eliminate the problem completely and replace pads and disks?

That's what I'm probably going to do, but knowing my luck I'll fork out on that and it won't have cured the noise.

I have got the same noise ever since fitting new GM disks and pads about 8mths ago, I put fresh grease on the pads about 4 weeks ago, was fine for about a week and half but its come back. Pressing the pedal stops it for about a mile then comes back, I have kinda given up on finding whats causing it tbh.

athough there is a risk of not curing the noise ,i would always say you can never waste money on new brakes so even if it dont cure it you have brand new discs and pads that you would of needed anyway.

A very good point. There's me, ever the pessimist!

Managed to give it a bit more of a test on the drive to work this morning (13 miles), the squeal wasn't half as bad as it was before I filed the pad down so that seems to have pinpointed the problem. Looks like new pads & disks is what I need.
