I have read on other posts that some people think a duff thermostat can affect the mpg of a car, is this true?

Yes on petrol not sure on an oil burner. If the ECU thinks the engine is cold then it sends in more fuel like the old style choke.

You will find a cooler intake temperature from cold winter months will cause the MPG to worsen.

when my 1.8 petrol thermostat had gone i was getting bad mpg

now that ive had a thermostat it warms up quicker now and i get much better mpg
may differ when really cold in the mornings needle goes between 87 to 89 when the temperature around 9 outside
takes 3 miles to reach 87-89 and stays there. may move a little if you put it on heater 4 setting

The car runs cold so it sticks more fuel in.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

How long for a diesel to warm up on cold mornings? After 3 minutes I'm on the m1 for 5 miles at 60-70 and it only then begins to warm up
