Engineering suffers from an image problem. People believe that engineers simply fix things, but we don't: we invent things. Unfortunately the false image is propagated by hundreds of companies out there who term repair-persons and equipment installers 'Engineers'. Engineering suffers from a lack of graduates, and at a time people are looking to manufacturing to fix the economy we need all the graduates we can get. Sadly they are put off by the false image of engineering. It is thus proposed that the title 'Engineer' is protected legally, like 'Doctor' or 'Architect'. It would be restricted to those who are professional engineers or product designers, or those who have retired from the industry.

    Thanks

If graduates are put off by the false image of engineering then do you really want them in the first place.

If they were that clever or passionate they would know what it was all about and train anyway, regardless of what the title was.

It's decline of job descriptions like 'fitter' (basically good at taking things off and putting them on) that have eaten into it.

I worked hard for my MIEE (MIET) though am slacking a bit on Chartered status because my current job doesn't really lend itself to it.

I agree with protecting the title "engineer" as we should the title doctor etc. I have worked in an engineering backround for most of my working life and my qualifications wouldn't entitle me to the title "engineer", but I think those that would be have worked bluddy hard to get those qualifications and should be held in suitable regard. The title Engineer in most of europe is protected and is used with great pride.
