    Default Car storage

I have to go for my knee op in a couple of weeks and I won't be allowed to drive for upto 8 weeks... during this time my car will be sat idle under my carport but still relatively open to the elements. So what can I do regards the car to help keep it in good condition... is it worth getting a cover or disconnecting the battery etc... is there anything I can put on my discs to stop them rusting??... anyone have any ideas or experiences/tips theyd like to share,,,?

8 weeks shouldn't cause any problems.

2nd hand cars are left for months on car forecourts waiting to sold, and the unloved ones don't turn a wheel for ages.
New ones are left on airfields and the like for months at a time, waiting to be shipped off to main dealers and the like.

Don't seem to do any of them any harm. Only suggestion is to perhaps buy a trickle charger for the battery.

Leave the handbrake off and the car in gear. Can you at least get it started every week or so?

Dont get a car cover, outside they cause more marks to your paint than the weather. Just polish and wax it it will be fine. Do you not have anyone you trust that could take it out, with you in it, once a week/fortnight to give it a good run.

That's not my findings, my wifes Nova has been sat outside under a Car Cover for almost 2 years and had not had any scratches or marks on the paint.

    Depends on the cover.

I used a cheap one (£50 cover) and on the points it was tighter on it left scratches where it moved about in the wind.

Also if you do get one make sure its a 'breathable' one as others can trap moisture and condensation and cause mould/moss growth.

Had a cheap cover on for a year, didn't damage anything.

Then spent a fortune on an all can do breathable fitted cover, it's crap, ripped very easily, now has tape on three sides to "repair" the damage.

It currently sits on top of another cheap and cheerful cover. Again with no paint scratch issues.

Saying that, for the 8 weeks the OP will have the car laid up, forking out on a car cover is silly IMO. Just keep it cleaned polished and start it every week (or two)

A cover shouldn't cause paintwork damage provided it's attached properly.

Will do it more harm than good unless you can take it for a run and get the engine fully up to temperature.

Just letting it idle on the drive will fill the exhaust up with moisture, and also allow condensation to form in the oil. Not to mention taking more out of the battery to crank it over than putting any charge back into it just by letting it idle for 10 mins or so.
