Default 04 Vectra 1.9 DTI Starting trouble

    Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum, Vauxhalls, Diesels and modern cars in general and tend to stick with points, condensers and carbs.

Any how the fault I am facing only seems to happen when the glow plug symbol doesn't light on the dash so I assume a semi warm start. The car just cranks over forever before it starts and when it starts a spanner light shows up on the dash briefly with lots of white smoke from the exhaust.

I first thought it could be glow plugs but if the light doesn't come on doesn't that mean the engine is still warm enough not to need them?

What are peoples views on this starting issue?

    Thanks,
    Chris

Id say it takes around 15 seconds to start maybe longer. It starts after about 5 seconds from cold when glow light comes on.

I'll keep you posted on what progress I make. I have a gut feeling towards fuel pump as if you crank it and stop a few times it starts quicker as if building up fuel pressure? maybe wrong as I normally only own cars and bikes from the 60s and 70s haha

    hi
mine is doing the same good to start from cold when the glow plug lights comes on but when used for a short journey 4 mins or so and then left for half hr ish would not start at all, tried for 5 mins or so...
then left car for 1hr ish glow plug light on for 1 sec then went off and started first time..
where is the sensor to tell the glow plugs to come on when cold ? as this sounds like a good place to start
    thanks in advance

car sorted....had the alternator replaced under warranty(local garage) as this was not charging correctly last month..after a check there was a plug and socket near the alternator wich was left unplugged...
not sure where or what its for but its fixed the problem.....
question is....was it done deliberaty???? so i go back in colder weather with starting issues, and they charge me for ??? and just plug back together!!!!!

    Hi Swanky,

It seems this is a common problem with these motors and there a are number of 'cures' from new batteries to injector seals to only starting on a tuesday with one leg off the floor and holding on to a rabbits foot.

Mine is cr@p to start in the morning and have chucked loadsa money at it... The stealers dont know whats wrong either so very best of luck mate...

One thing that cures all is an unexplained engine fire

    Hi,
I'm new to the forum and having the same problem with my 06 120hp. I don't have the answer yet but I can tell you what I have checked so far.
1 resistance of each glow plug checked and each reads 0.8 ohmns which seems OK, total pig to get to!
2 checked EGR valve for sticking - OK
3 battery voltage at cranking - 10.6v, just OK
4 checked battery voltage to terminal 30 on glow plug control module (down near battery tray, silver box with fins) on. - OK
5 power feed to glow plugs from terminal G1 and G2 on glow module - 11.7 volts with ignition switched on, voltage present for 17 seconds and then switches off.
6 Injector leak off pipes checked for leaks - OK
7 Fuel pipes and connections to fuel filter checked, - seem OK, no leaks.

I am really running out of ideas, and no fault codes logged, although if engine fails to start, spanner light stays on for a few minutes, then goes out.

    Other observations:

When engine does start it white smokes, which is incomplete combustion, so I am thinking it's not a lack of fuel.

Glow light time does not seem to change with ambient temperature, it's always about 5 seconds.
If you wait a further 10 seconds After the glow light Goes out before cranking, the engine starts fine. It looks like the glow plugs are actually still powered up. Even After the glow light goes out. This is not uncommon with glow plug controls.

On balance of what I have found so far, I still suspect the glow control but need. More info on how to test it before spending the cash. The only other possible cause is the engine coolant temperature sensor, which should tell the glow plug. Module how long to stay on. It may be coincidence but according to the temp gauge, the car takes a he'll of a long time to warm up!

Any ideas from anyone would be gratefully received.

    Nimbly

    Hi
Sounds like a pig of a problem...

You might want to check your glow plug relays.. i was told its the yellow one in R11(12v 70amp) that has something to do with glow plugs.. If they're faulty the glow plugs wont activate at all or will only do so occasionally.

I've got some pics on the first page of my thread regarding relay locations and what they do...

Plus if anyone reads thru that and can help me with my issue its a bonus!
