Default loud cracking noise when opening/closing door

This is getting worse. On the driver's door when I open/close it at a certain point it will make a loud cracking noise. I have smothered all the hinges in grease and WD40 but it still does it. I think it is the larger metal strap in the middle of the door that is making the noise. Any thoughts?

And grease/wd40 is what starts the problem in the first place.

undo bolt holding the strap to the a pillar, spin the strap 180 degrees, so its facing the wrong way, undo the 2 nuts holding strap to door, push the strap into the door a bit to release the 2 bolts, then spin the whole thing 180 degrees again, so its facing the correct way again, then do all the bolts up, job done, takes 2 minutes

i believe it stops the ball inside it from rolling, it glides on the grease and creates a flat spot on it, rather than rolling smoothly over the bumps in the strap

The check strap is designed to roll on 2 rollers inside.

By greasing it the bar just slides and wears away the nylon bush.

It does say in the service book that you dont grease the check strap.
