Default HELP NEEDED: 3.2 Petrol inner CV Boot gone and possible driveshaft

    Hi all,

both CV inner boots (as per picture) have gone and there appears to shudder under acceleration. Car is a GSI 3.2 preface lift and is on 40mm lowering springs. Tyre wear is even. Both front wheels have the same issue.

Would this mean that the inner driveshaft bearing has gone or would they just needed to be packed out again with grease and a new CV boot fitted?

I have not seen both CV boots rip like this before, they do not appear to have split with age. The outer ones are fine and show no sign of age or splitting.

    Any ideas guys?

I noticed mine like this the other day (both sides). I've no idea how long they've been like that for, but the car drives fine with no pulling / noises, etc. Going to get new boots fitted, re-packed with grease and see how it goes..... (Mine's a 2.2 DTi SRi)

I was wondering if a worn inner driveshaft joint/bearing would cause the CV boots to split like they have identically on both sides

that might be worth a try, at least if it didnt work we would not have to dismantle it twice

Anyone know if lowering the car would have any effect on the driveshafts, its a bit of a mystery to me and lee why they have split like this, unless the garage who mot'd the car cut the boots?

I think if its stupidy low it places extra load on the cv joint as it runs at a more acute angle than its meant to, also aftermarket replacement ones will wear out even quicker than OE ones. I've only heard it mentioned once or twice on here and if you consider the amount of lowered cars the failure rate isnt too high....

Driveshaft bearings are in fact CV joints you have an inner one (i believe) and an outer one. The outer one if worn will make the 'infamous' clicking on full lock.... Not sure how to check the inner one at all though.

Thinking about it, i supposed you could hold the driveshaft itself and then try to rotate just the cv joint and see if there is any movement between the two... that would tell you if any of the bearing have ground away and giving a slight movement which would be felt as a 'clunk' on take-off
Plasma's Tech2 services are now open and able to provide services
