    Default Speed awareness course

I was lucky enough to be offered the speed awareness course instead of points and fine recently after being clocked at 69 in a 60. The first topic they covered was what do the S L O W markings on the road actually mean? Their answer was Slow down, Look around, and Observe any Warnings. No-one admitted to knowing of this and someone commented that it was the most under publicized abbreviation ever.

My main observation was that most of the people present were aged over 30 and everyone (except one) had been caught doing within +10 of the limit at the time. The exception was a young woman, (who had children, I must add) who was caught at 42 in a 30 outside a primary school. I found this astounding that she was offered the course as I would hardly say it was borderline. I can only think maybe it was at some unearthly hour or there were extenuating circumstances.

I did not know that S L O W had any other meaning or acronym either. On your other point I was watching Emergency Bikers last night and a Biker Cop stopped 5 bikers well in excess of the speed limit, he stated he had hit 140mph to catch them, they were all offer driver improvement courses too. TBH I think a lot of it boils down to the mood the copper is in and if you pass or fail the attitude test when stopped.

I have one of those to look forward to. Got done for 59 in a 50.

****** Elkesley on the A1. If the speed limit is there because of the dangerous right turns, then the right turns should be taken out like the ones on the A64 York bypass. This speed restriction at Elkesley has been there for well over 25 years and was originally only temporary - to be honest, I have been through there at much more than 59, assuming the cameras were never active. Lesson learned - they are!

I've heard that a few times, but it is not the standard use of the actual word as intended! (simply a training tool)
Did they go on to explain the difference between the SLOW road marking and a sign marked with Slow? (Note the sign marking is not in capitals)

Page 71, no reference to SLOW being an Acronym, if it was surely it'd read S.L.O.W.

Those that can drive, do. Those that can't, teach awareness courses.

When I was on motorbikes, it was a running joke that Police Slow meant they couldn't catch us......

    There are two different signs
    Blue background SLOW
    Blue background POLICE SLOW

When reading POLICE SLOW, I assume it meant the Police had to slow...

    The other is :
    POLICE
    Unmarked cars operating
I assumed this was a sign for them, although it didn't really make any sense

    Next is :
    POLICE
    Accident
I assume this means the Police have had an accident...

    POLICE STOP :
This means the Police must stop, but not other traffic

    Other silly signs include :
POLICE OPERATION (what are they playing a game at the roadside?)
POLICE ROAD CLOSED (so why is it closed to the Police?)
POLICE -> (So the Police get diverted)

The only legal sign I am aware of with the word Police in it, is the white circle with red border, marked STOP POLICE
